Explore the rich culture and dramatic landscapes of South Sulawesi on this 6 day journey from Makassar to the highlands of Toraja. Begin with Makassar’s historic Fort Rotterdam and traditional Paotere Harbor before gliding by canoe through the limestone karsts of Rammang Rammang and visiting floating houses on Lake Tempe. Continue to Toraja to discover its remarkable traditions, from hanging graves and Tau Tau statues to ancient Tongkonan houses and megalithic sites. Soft treks through rice terraces and visits to traditional weaving villages reveal the unique heritage and striking scenery of this fascinating region.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Makassar

    Welcome to South Sulawesi! Upon arrival at Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy a short city tour featuring Fort Rotterdam, a historic Dutch fortress, and Paotere Anchorage, a bustling harbor where Bugis and Makassarese boats dock.

  • Day 2: Makassar to Sengkang (B/ L)

    After an early breakfast, depart for a peaceful escape to Rammang-Rammang Village. You will be picked up at 7:30 AM for a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of Makassar city. After an hour's drive, arrive at Rammang-Rammang Village, where the genuine smiles of the locals will greet you at a small jetty. Feel the cool breeze as you board a traditional canoe and paddle along the Puteh River, surrounded by stunning limestone karst towers and lush Nypa fruticans. Enjoy a gentle trek through Berua Village, and savor a traditional snack of fried banana with tea or coffee at a local house. After your break, paddle out of the village and continue your soft trek amidst the Karst Towers in Limestone Park, with lunch along the way. Next, we travel to Sengkang, where you’ll head straight to Tempe Lake. Here, we swap our car for a motorized canoe and cross the lake to visit fishermen families living in floating houses. Enjoy a coffee and snack break at one of the floating houses before canoeing back to Sengkang and checking in at your hotel for the night.

  • Day 3: Sengkang to Toraja (B/ L)

    Start the day with a visit to a traditional silk factory, where skilled Buginese women weave intricate silk fabrics. Next, travel through the picturesque landscapes of Siwa and Palopo en route to Toraja. Arrive in Rantepao, the heart of Toraja, and check into your hotel.

  • Day 4: Toraja (B/ L)

    Today, delve into the unique culture of the Toraja people. Visit Lemo, famous for its Tau Tau statues and hanging graves, followed by a visit to the baby graves of Kambira. Onwards to Londa with its ancient tombs in which the deceased was not buried but placed among the rocks. Lunch at a local restaurant in Rantepao. Onwards to Kete Kesu with a stop in Karuaya to enjoy the beautiful and typical Toraja panorama, from here we will continue with a short walk to Kete Kesu, one of the oldest Toraja villages. Here you still find two rows of the original village houses, the traditional ancestral houses of the Toraja people, Tongkonan, as well as traditional rice barns with colorful woodcarvings.

  • Day 5: Soft Trekking and Traditional Villages (B/ L/ D)

    Embark on a journey to Timonbayo for panoramic views of rice fields dotted with ancient megalith stones spread over the extensive rice fields. Then to a burial cave of Lokomata. From Lokomata, we continue our trip to Batutumonga where we will a have short trekking, enjoy the beautiful panorama and experience a moment of the unique Torajan lifestyle. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant in Batutumonga. In the afternoon, we will visit Bori (the megalith) then Pallawa & Sa’dan Tubaranna, local Torajan villages known as the weaving center of Rantepao. Continue to Batutumonga for a short trek through the picturesque landscape, followed by a visit to Bori to see more megaliths. In the afternoon, visit Pallawa and Sa’dan Tubaranna, renowned weaving villages. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at your hotel.

  • Day 6: Toraja to Palopo Departure (B)

    After breakfast, transfer to Palopo Airport for your flight to Makassar, where you’ll connect to your next destination.
